Trailers are as much a part of the movie-going experience nowadays as the films themselves. There’s something incomparably exciting about seeing what amounts to a two-minute sizzle reel of a release’s best scenes. It’s why trailer culture has proliferated into what it is today, and makes it so even the release date of a short teaser is a day to look forward to. In the spirit of this, our team gathers together the best the internet has to offer, delivering all the TV and movie trailers and teasers you can possibly handle in one place every week.
1. Wonder Woman
Even after the relatively disappointing releases of both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, there’s still one reason to feel good about the future of DC’s movie-verse: Wonder Woman. When it releases next year, it will be the first female-led superhero movie of the modern era (no, Catwoman and Elektra don’t count), and there’s a lot riding on its success as a result.
The latest trailer at least gives us reason to hope, expanding on our titular hero’s origin, her role fighting in World War I, and how she ended up in hiding circa Batman v Superman.
What we also get is an intriguing peek at Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. From what we can gather in the trailer, he washes ashore on the island of Themyscira, helps fend off an attack against Wonder Woman and her amazon cohorts, and then accompanies our hero to the battlefront of World War I. DC’s quickly running out of good will when it comes to their movies, but if this one lands the way it looks like it will, they’ll be right back in the thick of their competition with Marvel Studios.
2. A Series of Unfortunate Events
It’s been over a decade since the ill-fated movie adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. In a way though, that works in Netflix’s favor as they attempt to reboot the books into a streaming TV series. Few of us remember much about the film, and enough time has passed to where it won’t feel too crazy to give Snicket’s story another shot.
The first bit of footage from the series comes to us in the form of a character profile, detailing the nefarious Count Olaf, played by Neil Patrick Harris. In it, we get a sense for Olaf’s evil nature, his spotted past, and the havoc he’s set to wreak on the small children about to come into his care. A Series of Unfortunate Events hits Netflix January 13, 2017, so you can bet we’ll be getting lots more in the way of trailers in the near future.
3. Life
There’s been a considerable uptick in movies set in space in recent years, especially as organizations like Elon Musk’s SpaceX have begun to undertake exciting new projects that could put humans on the surface of Mars in a matter of years.
The latest in that long line of films will be Life, featuring the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The first trailer shows a crew aboard the International Space Station studying what appears to be an alien specimen. It’s not long before things go south in an Alien-esque sort of way, pitting our heroes against both each other and a foreign species determined to kill everybody it comes into contact with.
4. The Walking Dead
Alright, so we’re two episodes in to The Walking Dead‘s seventh season, and it’s been tough to quite get a handle on what it’s trying to accomplish. The premiere was a grim death march replete with busted skulls and an overall feeling that no one in their right mind would want to be alive in the world of TWD. The second episode flipped the script, showing us a happier side of the coin, live tiger and all.
If the latest teaser is any indication, Episode 3 will swing the pendulum back toward the “doom and gloom” side of things. Daryl’s in prison, Negan wants to break his spirit, and that dude with the burnt-up face is causing more trouble. Hooray?
5. T2: Trainspotting
Before Slumdog Millionaire made Danny Boyle a household name in Hollywood, there was Trainspotting: A visceral, oft-hard-to-watch film dealing with heroin addiction and the horrors of drug use. It’s been exactly 20 years since Boyle’s first masterpiece, making it the perfect time for a sequel as it brings back most of the original cast for another bow. Ewan McGregor returns as Mark Renton, a recovering heroin addict trying to piece his life back together.
The first trailer promises a healthy dose of Boyle’s unique directorial style, while still carrying a distinctly mid-’90s aesthetic. An added bonus: It also gives us a rare film where Ewan McGregor gets to speak in his native Scottish accent.
