Does it ever seem like some people you know are successful at everything they do? No matter what it is, everything they touch just magically turns to gold? Nine times out of 10, the secret is in their attitude. The way you approach life can make all the difference. If you resolve to stop operating from a negative mindset, you may just start to see things turn around for you.
“Referring back to ‘the glass is half full or half empty,’ this is just one tiny example of how important perspective is in how you see the world around you. The way you see the world is determined by the way you look at yourself. This also determines the way you feel about yourself and others, as well as the way you tend to act in any given situation…the first thing you should know really well is yourself…” said Hanif Raah in Positive Thinking: Discover the Power of Positive Thinking and Change Your Mindset to Become an Optimist.
Here are a few key ingredients in the recipe to living a successful life.
1. Gratitude

Be grateful for the opportunities given to you. Whenever you’re tempted to complain, remember what you already have. There is always someone who is willing to take what you don’t want.
“…I’ve seen that if I am not ceaselessly vigilant about rejecting ingratitude and choosing gratitude, I all-too-easily get sucked into the undertow of life in a fallen world. I start focusing on what I don’t have that I want, or what I want that I don’t have. My life starts to feel hard, wearisome, and overwhelming…I have seen how a lack of gratitude manifests itself in fretting, complaining, and resenting — whether within the confines of my own thoughts or, worse yet, through venting those thoughts to others…But I’ve discovered that gratitude truly is my life preserver…Choosing gratitude rescues me from myself and my runaway emotions,” said Nancy Leigh DeMoss in Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy.
2. Support

Everyone needs someone. It is difficult to have a satisfying and productive life without the help, caring, and support of others. If you find that you don’t have many friends, go out and join a local hobby group or club. The worst time to find out you need someone is when you’re experiencing a crisis. At work, make a point to mentor others. Be willing to give and receive support.
“Helping others should be a natural extension of every business leader’s responsibilities. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come as easy as you would think. As leaders, we often get too caught up in operations or our own problems to give people the help they need. However, in the last year, I’ve realized that most of my best clients, partners and relationships have come from me helping someone,” said Forbes contributor John Hall.
3. Perseverance

Those who win at the game of life never quit. Once you set your mind to do something, always follow through. Perseverance, or “grit” is essential to reaching your goals. Without it, you’ll have a lot of half-finished projects and a life full of regrets.
“Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” said psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth in a TED talk.
4. Humility

Know when to say you are sorry and know when to lend a helping hand. Being prideful will just serve to put a wedge between yourself and others. Life is not just about you; step outside of yourself and be sensitive to the needs of others.
5. Flexibility

Nothing stays the same for too long; that’s what makes life interesting. Try not to be inflexible to change, and learn to go with the flow once in a while. Refusing to change could cause you to miss out on a great opportunity.
